I'm sure you've been told thousands of times to 'drink your water'. And i'm also sure if you're anything like me, you've heard it so many times that it goes in one ear and out the other. But recently I have discovered why this advice is so commonly given to people looking to lead a healthier lifestyle, and drinking enough water is probably the most helpful and important health advice you will receive. If you're not yet convinced that water is the Holy Grail of good health, then let me convince you...
Benefits of Drinking Water
Water helps to rid and flush the body and blood of toxins and bacteria
Prevents dehydration
Increases Brain Function
Decreases dizziness and brain fog
Helps skin to maintain its elasticity
Water is used to produce sweat, which helps to regulate body temperatures
Improves skin health and helps to brighten complexion
Improves and Increases Metabolism
Aids Digestion
Increases Mood
But how much do I need to drink per day?
To reap the real benefits, the Australian Health Guidelines recommend the average male should consume 2.6 Litres a day, and the average female 2.1 Litres. Keep in mind these are only guidelines; everyone's bodies vary and we all require different and personalised levels for optimal health, so work out what works well for you.
What can I do if I struggle to drink the recommended amount each day?
Remembering to drink water at all let alone trying to remember to drink over 2 Litres a day can be a struggle at first, but here are some things you can try to make it more interesting and easier to remember:
Try leaving a water bottle next to your bed each night to remind you to drink some water as soon as you wake up
If you don't like the plain taste of water, try adding some natural flavours such as mint leaves, lemon, lime, orange or even blueberries
Link the act of drinking a glass of water with one of your daily habits. For example every morning when you go to brush your teeth, challenge yourself to finish a whole glass of water before you brush. This will help to form an association with a habit you already have (brushing teeth) and therefore prompt and remind you to repeat that habit every morning. Try this with any of your daily habits.
That sums up my first blog post about the benefits of drinking (enough) water. I hope you found this helpful and let me know if you try out any of my tips!
