Firstly, introduce yourself! Who are you, what do you do, and what are your passions?
Hey! My name is Izzy and i’m a holistic health coach who specialises in hormone health, menstrual health, skin health as well as gut health. I focus on treating the root cause of ailments by simple lifestyle and diet changes. I work with women internationally to help them heal their painful periods, PCOS, acne and gut problems. After experiencing excruciating period cramps, cystic hormonal acne and then being on birth control for 6 years, I started looking at more natural healing options. Now I help others to do the same!
Why is balancing hormones such a big part of your philosophy as a holistic health coach?
Hormone imbalance is the root cause of all menstrual ailments. I know doctors who are literally not allowed to suggest natural healing therapies because then they will lose money. Women, young girls and people who menstruate are not informed on how their body truly works from a very young age. as soon as we express any pain or discomfort, we are shoved on medication and birth control, almost as a way of shutting us up. This stems in misogyny and sexism. Birth control is a wonderful thing and the fact that we have full choice over it is great! However, we are not told the truth behind birth control and now birth control is used for literally all hormonal ailments. I want women to fully understand how they can heal their bodies and rid themselves of pain and excruciating cramps by very simple lifestyle and diet changes, so they at least have the choice whether or not they want more of a natural approach.
How can hormonal imbalances occur in your body, and what are some common signs/symptoms?
Hormonal imbalances show up in various ways. Think painful periods, PMS, acne and skin conditions, sudden weight gain, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, cystic ovaries, thin hair and brittle nails. These are all very common, but not normal symptoms of imbalanced hormones.
What are some actionable changes and rituals we can start to implement into our daily lives to aid in hormone balance?
There are 3 main things to focus on for balancing hormones. These are:
Balancing blood sugar levels - start your day with savoury breakfast, limit your intake of added refined sugars and limit carb intake late at night.
Eating the correct foods for each specific hormone phase, I.E. when your estrogen peaks in your luteal phase (week before your period begins), eat less estrogen rich foods. Coffee depletes the body from magnesium which is an important mineral for healthy periods too, so caffeine also adds to hormonal imbalances.
Avoid endocrine disrupters in foods and external environments such as cleaning chemicals and perfumes. Eat as close to nature as possible and avoid harmful chemicals within food such as pesticides from non-organic fruits and veggies, and flavourings.
What foods are helpful in aiding the body to regulate and balance hormones?
The foods that will help you balance hormones and flush out excess estrogen are cruciferous vegetables, raw carrots, chia seeds, opt for extra virgin olive oil over seed oils, omega 3 rich foods such as wild caught salmon and mackerel. Beans are great for stabilising blood sugar levels so include them too!
What really, not to be dramatic, changed my life was starting to make my own cold pressed juices and smoothies first thing in the morning. It really is the ultimate superfood to create a smoothie or a juice with various fruits, vegetables and any other superfoods. That’s what really got me into content creating - my first digital product was a juice and smoothie recipe e-book!
